Need only part-time maid?
Both the employer and the maid are committing an offence. A maid may not work for anyone other than the employer named in the work permit. It does not matter if she paid or not. Please note that you should only employ a local part-time maid.

What is the minimum and maximum age set for a maid?
There is no minimum or maximum age set for a maid. However, the age limit for most insurance policy covers is 18-60.

How good are the one-dollar agencies?
On the surface, very good. Considering that one dollar will not fetch a bowl of wanton soup, one dollar is chicken feed. Imagine, if you have to submit an application for a work permit, your bus fare will exceed one dollar. So is the Employment Agency which charges one dollar a profit-making body or a charitable organization?

Employment Contract

How long is the contractual period of the standard employment contract?
In accordance with the Employment Contract, the contractual period is two years upon the maid's arrival.

How long will take to get a work permit application approved?
It may take one and a half months up to three months. It will usually take the first-time employer of an Foreign Domestic Helper longer than the current employer.

In a transfer case, when may a maid report for work with her new employer?
The maid is not permitted to start work for the new employer until the application is approved by the Director of Immigration.

What should I do when the employment contract expired at the end of a typical two-year working contract?
The maid is entitled to continue or leave. Most agencies provide service of renewing and cancellation work permit.

Must all maids go home when their work permit expires?
Yes, unless she finds alternative employment (and is issued a new Work Permit that goes with the new job). The maid shall, upon expires of an old contract or before the commencement of a new contract, return to her place of origin for vacation. A maid should not stay in the HKSAR longer than the permitted period of stay. If circumstances do not permit the maid to return to her place of origin for vacation immediately upon expires of the old contract, she may apply for an extension of stay for her to defer the vacation leave.

Expenses

What are the costs of employing a maid?
You are responsible for the following fees and expenses for the departure of the maid from her place of origin and entry into Hong Kong: free passage from her place of origin to Hong Kong; a daily food and traveling allowance of HKD100 per day from the date of her departure from origin until the date of her arrival at Hong Kong ;medical examination fees; authentication fees by the relevant Consulate; visa fee; mandatory insurance; administration fee or fee such as Philippines Overseas Employment Administration fee, or other fees of similar nature imposed by the relevant government authorities; employees retraining levy; and/or agency fee if you engage a maid agency.

What are the expenses I am responsible for the maid?
Free accommodation; food free of charge; free medical treatment; daily essential facilities free of charge; a free return passage to her place of origin upon termination or expires of the employment contract; a daily food and traveling allowance of HKD100 per day from the date of her departure from Hong Kong until the date of her arrival at origin; severance payment and long service payment; compensation payment; cost of transporting the maid's remains and personal property in the event of the death of the maid; and winter clothing for Indonesian maids.

Why are employers required to buy an insurance policy?
Part IV of the Employees' Compensation Ordinance provides that all employers are required, by law, to take out insurance policies to cover their full liabilities.

How much is the Employees Retraining levy?
The Employees Retraining levy payable is HKD400 per month multiplied by the number of months covered by the employment contract. It shall be paid in a lump sum before the issuance of visa or by four equal installments with the first installment paid before the issuance of visa.

Can I claim for a refund for the levy?
The Employees Retraining levy is not refundable under any circumstances.

Wages

What is the salary of a maid?
HKD3,320 per month.

What is the prevailing Minimum Allowable Wages?
Employer shall pay the helper in accordance with the amount stated in the standard employment contract which shall not be less than the minimum allowable wage.

How should I pay wages to my maid?
You are advised to pay wages by cheque or by autopayment into your maid's bank account. To do this, you have to obtain your maid's consent before hand. If your maid does not prefer such methods of payments, you should pay her wages in legal tender.

Can an employer ask her maid to clean up her mother's flat once a week?
It is very clear that a foreign domestic worker may not work for another person. The employer may not claim to be ignorant of this prohibition.

If my maid is not paid for washing my mother's flat, is it still illegal?
Yes, it is still illegal. A maid shall work only for the employer and in the occupation specified in the work permit.

What medical checks are necessary for my maid?
Medical checks upon arrival into Hong Kong are not a must. Depending on the options you choose when purchasing insurance coverage or agency fee, it may have been included.

Maid wants to send money home?
Your maid would like to send her monthly salary back to her family regularly. You can engage remittance service through us.

Maid went missing?
You should cancel her work permit immediately. You have to contact the Immigration Department or if necessary report to the police and the agency for assistant.

Maid got pregnant?
A maid is eligible for 10 weeks' paid maternity leave. You are prohibited from dismissing a pregnant maid from the date on which she is confirmed pregnant by a medical certificate to the date on which she is due to return to work on the expires of her maternity leave.

Most agencies, especially those directly involved in recruitment responsibly undertake some form of counseling and discipline as an after-sales service for their employers and maids.
